Congratulations and warm warm hugs to Charlene “CHAT” Louise Alagon Almarvez, the female skyscraper who won the right to represent the Philippines in the Super Model of the World competition which takes place in the US Brazil this January. (If anyone can tell me what her last name is, please drop me a note in the comment section!) (Thanks to Aina and Karl for Chat’s complete name!) Although I prefer the build-up of excitement in traditional beauty pageants, I enjoyed the laid-back presentation of haute couture and the heart-felt speeches given by the organizers Joey Espino of Runway Productions’ and Katie Ford of Ford Models.

Joey Espino, who started his career as a talent scout and choreographer, talked about how his dream came true – making it BIG in the fashion industry. If I wasn’t mistaken, Joey got a bit teary-eyed at one point of his speech but was able to keep his emotions in check. I remember working with Joey Espino in several fashion shows – he was (and still is) small but terrible!!! All the models, even the senior ones would do their best NOT to get his knickers in a twist or else they’d never hear the end of it. But we ALL loved him because behind that tough veneer was a soft heart.
Joey, together with his brother Audie Espino are the moving forces behind Philippine Fashion Week and the Super Model Philippines franchise.
Katie Ford, whose parents founded the famous Ford Models, shared her passion too – the fight against Human Trafficking, also known as SLAVERY. The Philippines, she said, was the third largest “supplier” of migrant workers and therefore is vulnerable to such abuse. Katie Ford also talked in great length about Visayan Forum, a group that helps people who have suffered in the hands of unscrupulous “employers”. This is an issue that is also close to my heart; I treat my house-helpers like family and have even rescued a few girls from bad situations.

Hi ina, they have a Facebook site you can join. Search: Supermodel of the World Philippines. Check it out and look at the info page. THey have phone numbers there too. you can send them a fb message. From what I know is that they have go-sees for all supermodel aspirants. They also have classes. Keep my updated on your progress!!!

Hi Joyce, I can’t tell from the photos but does Chat have that must-have short torso and long limbs combo that is very important in the modelling world? I like her features a lot but she has to practice her modelling face and demeanor more because right now, it’s a bit blaaah. A gregarious personality is a big help too because as a model, you may have the most beautiful face, but if you don’t have the effervescence to make those runway scouts sit up and take notice of you when you go to those go sees, uuwi kang luhaan.

Hi Gabe! Katie Ford personally judged the contestants. From what I know, she also considers the personality of the girls. I don’t think they tolerate spoilt models. This is not a solid fact that I know, just something I have observed from my conversations with the different people behind Super Model and my short interaction with Katie.
The few photos I have of Chat were mostly taken after she won and I think she was a bit stunned, therefore the blaaaah look. She’s only 16 years old, you know. Winning a major contest at that age is a big honor so she must have been mildly dazed. Unfortunately, I arrived at the contest late. I had a radio show til 10pm so I wasn’t able to watch. From what I did see, I personally thought Janina stood out but I think we can trust Katie Ford and the Espino brothers to spot a winner. Chat is lovely and I’m sure that the Pinay spirit in her will rise to the battle in Brazil!

congrats… we used to call her CHAT when she was still in grade school… TRIVIA: she was our 1st Princess of the Night and she was really a SUPER MODEL… from the OUR LADY OF MAULAWIN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION TEACHING STAFF.. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!… Mabuhay ka!
