Angelia Gabrena Ong and Sex Marriage
Gosh I missed all the drama that happened at last night’s Miss Philippines Earth 2015 beauty pageant after Manila candidate and eventual winner Angelia Gabrena Ong answered her final question. I was up north at Subic covering the Mrs Globe Philippines pageant.
Anyway it seems like she stirred up a hornet’s nest with her answer. See below.
(Got the screen cap above from a Facebook account of a friend)
Many bible-thumpers jumped on her for what seemed like support for same-sex marriage.
Then…the grammar police went Nazi on her sentence construction.
And others wondered if she thought that the question was about sex before marriage.

Whatever the case, I’m throwing my full support behind Angelia Gabrena Ong simply because – it is not fair to judge a person based on one question.
It is also a personal policy of mine to respect a person’s opinions (basta wag illegal). Also, I think pageants should tread carefully when it comes to asking contestants about divisive topics.
As for our contestants speaking in broken or not so good English? Well, it shows me they can speak at least two languages. Many can’t even speak one language well! And, I try to look for their ability to make sense more than their ability to speak perfect English.
When scientific conventions have speakers from different countries presenting their papers in English, there are bound to be grammar mistakes galore! But they give leeway for such mistakes… so why can’t we?
Also, if pageant candidates choose to answer in Tagalog or Pilipino, then good on them! I appreciate contestants who make that choice.
Going back to a person being judged on one question – yes it is not fair. So that is why pageants normally have a pre-judging event where judges get to dig deeper into the minds of each contestant. It is entirely possible for a person to be excellent in the pre-judging and then struggle in the final Q&A.
Perhaps Angelia presented herself so well in the pre-judging (and in all pageant activities) that the judges felt she deserved the title, period.
Whatever the case, she has been crowned and will be the Philippine representive the in the next Miss Earth pageant. She needs the support of the pageant community as she prepares for it. At least now she and her trainers know what area needs work.
Wishing Angelia Gabrena Ong the best!!!
hello ms joyce, we won mi
ss earth b2b:) any thoughts?
Miss Joyce, may we know your opinion po regarding Donald Trump’s remark against Mexican immigrants. Maraming Latin countries and nagwithdraw ng participation this year because of that. And do you think, magiging advantage kaya ni Pia ang pagwithdraw ng mga high caliber na Latina?
Well his comments are working because his ratings in the surveys for ‘presidentiables’ are high and are going higher as he continues his rhetoric… the pageants are just his sideline naman so I don’t think he is going to back down specially now that his popularity is soaring.
He also has made disparaging remarks against China in the past and yet he holds several interests in that country. So you can see just how business savvy he is. His style is to be loud and bigmouthed naman talaga and it works.
Unfortunately, Mexico and Latin American nations have to make a stand against his statements. It’s national pride and racial pride.
If he had said something disparaging against Filipinos, we would be in such a quandary because while we have national pride like the Latin am countries, we also are blind crazy about MU. I bet you that it would be a major national issue and on the front page of our papers if Pia should compete or not. In this imaginary situation my guess is that we will swallow our pride and compete.
Now if DT wins by some miracle, I’ll be so worried for America and the rest of the world but I believe it will be a wonderful thing for MU and his other pageants. I’ll also be worried for illegal aliens in the US. Many are Pinoy, and even if they are TNT, siyempre we care about our own. And we know just how hard working or people are if given the chance at a decent job that pays well enough.
As for Pia’s chances, it really depends. Baka naman the countries backing out don’t have competitive girls diba? It won’t matter if that is the case. I haven’t been following which countries have backed out and haven’t looked at their candidates yet. Maybe you can tell me more about the gorgeousness level of the girls who have backed out? And maybe you can tell me which Latinas you wish would back out because malakas ang beauty nila? Aahahahaahah!
Going back to DT, Although I doubt he will win, I am concerned about his rising popularity among voters. I am not a big DT fan or supporter and I only like him when the Philippines does well in MU.
So there. Sorry, medyo kalat ang thoughts ko dito but like a shadow, I am closely following DT’s moves as he competes his own ‘ beauty pageant ‘ for the most important man/Woman in America.
Hello Miss Joyce,
hahaha…that is really true po..I just read your response po. Lately, mahina po ang connection ng internet dito sa amin. LOL.
Regarding Latinas na nagbackout…yung Panama and Costa Rica lang naman so far ang alam ko but those countries are not difficult to beat. Just weeks ago, I checked misso and Pia is leading the hotpicks. Maganda na masyado si Pia and she’s really very serious preparing for the competition.
I believe, your so busy with your showbiz career kasi medyo mailap kayo sa pag update about pageants this time…Last week, nakapag top 10 po tayo sa Miss United Continents courtesy of Miss Tia.
This month, inaabangan ang Miss Globe. May chismis daw na pinag-iinitan is Anne ng ibang candidates sa sobrang lakas nya…she even messaged it to his close friend na tinatawag nyang ‘direk’.
Parul is now on her way to Bangkok for Miss Grand International.
Pero Miss Joyce, I am really thinking about Hannah Sison..sana sya ang ipadala sa MTQI 2015!
Joyce,
When I heard that she was asked about marriage equality, I immediately questioned Carousel’s rationale of why they allowed such question to be asked? Since this pageant from it’s inception has focused on environmental protection and preservation I fail to see the link between marriage equality and the environment.
The other questions were also not related to the environment right? I wasnt There to watch. But with today’s development in the US, the question was timely…
the question was asked before the US ruling and after Ireland. for a pageant that prides itself with environmental protection and preservation they should stick with that. i think other girls were are asked about what their parents can learn from them or i want to be like you what your advice for me to that nature. we were questioning who gave zsa zsa the question since all questions are pre-screened by them
You must be a very busy person. Madalang na kasi ang iyong mga postings. We understand, though.
Yes, well, it seems God is changing things in my life at this point. I’ve gotten busy with lots of things and napabayaan na Yung blog. I’m praying though for direction in my writing. I don’t know if I can return to writing about pageants but Sayang naman my passion for writing. Let’s see where God leads me… But Trevor, thanks for asking!
Tungkol naman sa Q n A, anything na puwedent itanong because lahat nang dapat sumali dito ay package meaning beauty and brain and height dahil represent nila ang bansa natin. Di dapat manalo or panalunin kung anumang ang nangyari that night di natin alam. Dapat nasagot ni Manila ang Q n A at hindi siya nabulol at dapat nasagot niya ang tanong. Maraming nadismaya nuong gabi nang coronation.
Then MPE should have told the contestants to prepare for any kind of question. Ang alam nila is environmental questions. Also asking questions that are divisive do nothing good. Fans are now divided over her. Nakakalerky
Dapat ang nanalo ay si Miss San Antonio NE. Ang mga taong listens the questions ni Manila di niya nasagot ang tanong and the audience knows that except the followers niya na dinaan sa palakpak at ang San Antonio na mesmerized sa sagot niya at tahimik na nakinig at hinangaan ang Miss San Antonio.
I really thought San Antonio would win too but Angelia got the crown and I’m supportive of her… Both are beautiful to me ! But San Antonio should try Bb Pilipinas because she really is pang beauty queen…
To me that kind of question should not and never ask. There are many questions that is relevance to the environment that you can ask in a beauty pageant. There is drought issues in California, the recent earthquake in Nepal, and the flood in Texas etc. I will not be suprise that one of these days in a beauty pageant they will ask about the gender identity crisis of Bruce Jenner.
Miss Joyce,
I reviewed the video and I think, medyo nalito pa si Angelia kung ang narinig niya is same sex marriage ba talaga or sex before marriage…but then again, nakuha ko rin ang punto nya when she said na “if the person feels that he or she needs to be married to show love”. Parang ang punto duon is kesyo babae at lalaki o kaya parehong babae or parehong lalaki, kung sa tingin nila ang kasal ang magpapatunay na mahal nila ang isa’t isa, ok lang na may marriage – kahit same sex nga:)
Yes, it can be taken as an answer for either same sex marriage or premarital sex. And what you quoted is the gist of her answer. Whatever she was thinking, na-coronahan na siya at deserving naman. How I wish lang na MPE stuck to environmental questions because that is what the girls prepared for… but then again, a true beauty queen should be able to handle any question….
Oo nga naman, Miss Joyce…napaka-irrelevant naman din kasi ang question ni Ms. ZsaZsa.
Well it’s a good question for the closed -door pre-judging. Basta i-respeto ang opinion nya, ke pro or con. It shouldn’t be like tine-test mo then if you share the same opinion then you give a higher score. There should be more thought put into the final coronation question… And it is an environmental pageant, let’s stick to the topic…
Korek miss Joyce:) what’s your view pala about the rumors that miss world and miss you might be held in china?
I mean, Miss U to be held in China along with Miss World…
